LUTINA
Tokai Optical Japan has unveiled a revolutionary new lens material designed to shield the eyes from the harmful effects of high-energy Ultra-Violet (HEV) light. This innovative material boasts a remarkable 94% filtration rate for HEV rays within the 400nm-420nm range.
Blue light in the 400-420nm range, while essential for some functions like regulating our sleep-wake cycle, can also be harmful to our eyes. Prolonged exposure to this type of blue light has been linked to an increased risk of digital eye strain.

There are many types of eye diseases that can significantly impact your vision and overall health. Among them, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the most prevalent and concerning eye conditions. Reports suggest that this disease is caused by damage to the pigment "lutein," a vital component of the "macula" – the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision – by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Years of meticulous research conducted by Tokai scientists have identified HEV light, primarily emitted by electronic devices, as a major contributor to ocular health issues. Lutein, a natural antioxidant found within the human eye, plays a crucial role in absorbing HEV light. However, with age and environmental factors, Lutein levels decline, leaving the eye vulnerable to oxidative damage. This oxidative stress, triggered by unchecked HEV exposure, accelerates the development of serious eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts.
Unfortunately, Lutein cannot be produced within the body. The only way to increase Lutein concentration is by consuming, either green leafy vegetables or supplements containing Lutein. However, in this digital age, Lutein depletion occurs at a much faster rate than replenishment.
Read the report (here) explaining why blue light filtering lenses are crucial for long-term eye health, not just short-term relief.
A review of traditional blue light lens solutions and their limitations, compared to newer approaches.
Traditional blue light-blocking lenses often utilize a surface coating to filter out harmful blue light. This coating, however, can wear off over time due to normal use, diminishing its effectiveness.
It leaves a reflective blue coating and has an obvious yellowish tint to the lenses. Certain lens manufacturers use a reflective bluish coating, while others use a reflective bluish-purple coating.
These blue cut coatings will slightly dim and reduce the overall transparency of the lenses and are only recommended for people whose eyes are sensitive to bright light or the light emitted by digital devices.

Tokai's Lutina lenses, on the other hand, feature integrated blue light filtering. The blue light blocking technology is embedded within the lens material itself, ensuring consistent and long-lasting protection even if the lens surface coating experiences minor scratches or wear and tear.
The lenses feature a standard green anti-reflective coating that maintains clarity and reduces the yellowish tint significantly while incorporating a blue light filter material.
Given this, the Lutina material will definitely still have a slight residual yellowish tint. Under natural sunlight, the lenses appear slightly yellowish. While under LED or fluorescent lighting, the lenses appear slightly purplish.
This is because it filters out high-energy visible (HEV) light in the 400-420nm range. Since this range corresponds to blue light, filtering it makes the complementary color, yellow, more noticeable, giving the Lutina material its characteristic tint. This yellowish appearance confirms that it is effectively blocking HEV light.
Blue light filtering materials also enhance perceived contrast in the day and night, resulting in brighter vision and improved clarity for the viewer.

It’s important to note that any blue light lens solution — whether coating based or material based — can affect color perception. If your lifestyle demands accurate color perception, such as for photography, color grading, or color analysis, it’s best to opt for a clear lens solution instead.
Tokai's Lutina blue light filtering lenses exhibit exceptional optical clarity, surpassing the transparency of competing materials. This results in brighter vision and a more natural, less yellowish appearance compared to similar blue light filters offered by other brands. This material represents a new approach to eye care, designed to protect eyes from oxidative stress and harmful blue light.
